List of Prominent Characters

So, the NL and EN tags are the ones actually used in the story. If it’s listed for both then it’s a shorthand I’m using to note which of the characters is which. Where no name for ‘both’ is included I haven’t used a name for both. (Expect this list to get updated per chapter!)

Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay ’til death. Whoever settles, never leaves.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children’s bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town’s teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into dark, medieval practices of the distant past.

In chapter 28: Ste has been freeing the Wyler Witch from her bonds. OH NOES!

TW for discussions of bestiality and more attempted suicide.

Chapter 29 – Scene 1

Oh, hey, look. Jo actually gets a pov scene. We’re only, like, SIX CHAPTERS FROM THE END and she finally gets to get a pov scene.

Also apparently, despite him waking up earlier to shout out his warning and startle the nurse, he’s not actually awake yet and Jo is wondering if he’ll ever wake up again. BUT HE ALREADY DID ONCE, JO. WHY ARE YOU NOT MENTIONING THAT HE WOKE UP ONCE BEFORE?!

And she’s reliving a nightmare. Remember that time she and Ste went to Thailand and she had a nightmare? Well, this is the same nightmare and the bestiality is still entirely unnecessary.

Anyway, Maxmatt, while being in a coma (or possibly not; I’m confused by now), is trying to off himself and Jo is trying to off herself and she doesn’t because Plot and she decides to kidnap her son from the hospital because she needs to go home just like she needed to go home in Thailand way back in the early chapters of the book.

And we have a sort of tender moment between Jo and her dad as he relents and allows his daughter to take his remaining grandson out of the hospital (from which he hasn’t been released) because she’s just that upset and he’s just a tired old man and… I’m just going to let you all decide what you make of that.

Chapter 29 – Scene 2

And this is all about the care ride home and how Jo and Matt are losing it and being more suicidal and making her father drive them to town. But, like, her father is an Outsider, so he’s actively being repelled and he’s taking his car to drive all the way to Atlanta and I kind of wish the English version made more of getting to the airport before getting all the way to Atlanta or at least somehow remarked on it because it feels weird to think he’ll just drive all the way there. Or maybe that’s just because I’m not used to flying between cities in a country being a big thing and USians reading will just include the airport as part of how they interpret what he’s saying.

Also, Jo pulls herself and her son out of the car and her dad is now gone and she’s desperately dragging her son to what is presumably some form of safety from whatever madness is affecting their minds. And that’s it for this chapter!
