This Month's Goals

I Want to Read:

  • An Accident of Stars by Foz Meadows
  • City of Betrayal by Claudie Arseneault (betareading)

I Want to Write:

  • 40,000 words of fiction

Yep. That’s a big jump from “I just want to write at all”, but that’s because I’m joining Camp NaNo this April! Whoot! My official goal is somewhere around 30,000, I think, but why not be ambitious? XD

Writing-wise, I’ll be focusing April on the short story, but I’ve no doubt but that I’ll make forays into the demiprincess story as well. I have some more plans for Patreon content as well that I want to be working on, but I’m terrible at keeping track of the word count there or for shorter posts and may not manage to keep track. Thus, I’m officially declaring that I won’t count them for this month’s word goal.

And the books… Well,  obviously I’m going to aim for a lower book-reading threshold than I might since I’m focusing on writing. Mostly, both these books are chunksters, by my definition, and I feel horridly slow about reading them. Claudie’s book comes with a deadline, sort of, and An Accident of Stars isn’t really grabbing me right now, so I need the additional push to keep reading. We’ll see how it goes. ^_^

And… Yeah. That’s it! Onwards we go! XD

Last Month's Goal
I Want to Read:

  • Books!

I Want to Write:

  • Words!

Well. I… certainly managed this. I’ve even managed to do more of both than I’d anticipated! :O March was a bit of an odd month, all things considered, so let’s just focus on the positives in that I did a fair bit of reading big, chunky books as well as some novellas and I also got a decent chunk of writing done. As I write this, my spreadsheet helpfully informs me I’ve written over 15,000 words this month, and most of them are fiction words for a new short story that I was working on. It’s not finished yet, but yay short story for my portfolio!

I also got a very little work done on DemiPrincess, which is less yay because I just want to finish it. I need to plunk myself down and do so. If I push, I should be able to get it done in a couple of days. This is how close I am!

And… Yeah. Sorry I’m not very talkative right now. I’m writing this after a few days of much talking and stressful posting, so I’m a bit drained of words, I think. I just want to look forward at the future and squeal about good things.

This Month's Goals

I Want to Read:

  • Whatever strikes my fancy

I Want to Write:

  • Anything I can

February is just going to keep following the “I’m a little busy moving to make any kind of concrete plans on what I want to be doing creatively and for the blog” line that has been such a strong January thread. So… I don’t really have anything to say here except that I hope (obviously) that I’ll actually be able to settle into things more than enough to feel like I’m returning to normalcy by the end of the month, so I can make proper plans. We’ll see, though! We’ll see.

Last Month's Goal

I Want to Read:

  • Whatever strikes my fancy

I Want to Write:

  • Anything I can

I have managed this! Surprise, surprise. I actually wound up focusing on the bilingual read-through of HEX rather than fiction, but it’s still netted me a pretty respectable wordcount for the month. I won’t give you details because I’m actually writing this up a few days before January is done. I’m fully expecting that I won’t have time or ability to finish things up when it’s closer to the end of the month. I’m sorry about that!

I’ve now finished the first part of the book, so the bilingual readthrough is going on a hiatus (well, has gone, really) until further notice. As I said on the latest post, I do plan to return to it. Just not in the foreseeable future. It’ll be at least until March, I think, but I just don’t know. Maybe I’ll have finished up all the posts between now and then? (I can’t really see that happening, but who knows. Stranger things have happened, after all.)

But, yeah. January was mostly about nonfiction, which I think is a first for me.

New year! New set of goals! But not in January!

This Month's Goals
I Want to Read:

  • Whatever strikes my fancy

I Want to Write:

  • Anything I can

Are we starting the year off entirely free to do whatever it is that I feel like? Why, yes. Yes, we are! There’s a reason for this and you may have read about it already: I’m moving and starting a new job at the start of this year! :O So I don’t know how much time I’ll have and what, if anything, I can get done. The move involves some major changes and I really hope that it’ll work out the way that I’m, well, hoping.

And yes there is secrecy to this! As you have undoubtedly noticed if you’ve been around the blog or my twitter a while, I’m a pretty private person, so I’m not really keen on sharing a lot of details. But what I do know is that it’ll be a massive flurry of activity while I get settled and sort myself and the changes out into sense and order and I expect that I’ll be fairly busy and tired for much of this beginning of the year. (Anxiety brain has been having an absolute field day with this, which doesn’t really help.)

So, rather than trying to feel obligated to start the year off with a concrete set of goals, I’m just going to go for low-key no-pressure anything-is-good goals. If it’s anything like other years, this also means I’ll actually get a ton of stuff done and be off to a great start for the year, but I just really don’t want to pressure myself into feeling bad about finishing things that I’m not sure I’ll have the time or the ability to work on in this time.

At the moment, I’m not excited about these changes. I’m terrified. Excitement will come, don’t worry! But for now anxious brain is very anxious and seems mostly concerned about making me feel absolutely sick and making my body forget to breathe. o_O Like, how does your body forget to breathe? It’s usually the thing that tells you breathing is a good and useful activity and you should seriously consider doing it.

But, yes, mostly terrified. It’ll work out, I know. Brains, though. They like to come up with doomsday scenarios. Well, mine does anyway. Yours may work differently. ANYWAY, that’s why there’s no specific goals in January.

Soon it’ll be 2017. OMG! Is it already almost 2017?! WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TIME?! Also can we rewind 2016 and start over because wow what a mess? Let’s look at 2017 instead. I’m hopeful it’ll be much brighter.

Back in September, I started plotting some grand plans for 2017. They’re all on hold. All of them. Yes. Every single one. There’s a reason for this, though! You see, I got a new job at the tail-end of 2016 and I’ll be starting off 2017 with moving and getting settled into a new place and a new job and everything that comes with it. I had a lot of plans that hinged on the start of the new year (because then I can actually remember when something started) and said start is going to be filled up with moving, settling, etc and I’m not sure how long it’ll take.

So, officially, all my plans are on hold. But I still want to tell you about them! You can all help me pick which ones to prioritise if you like! Well, within reason. For example: any plans to stream or record stuff is going to be on hold until further notice for sure, so don’t pick those. But here is the list of things I’d like to do in 2017:

Well… December… was not the rest of 2016? That’s… good? I mean, it was largely in keeping with the theme of 2016 for a lot of people, but it wasn’t… as collectively awful? Or perhaps November just wore everyone down so much that the collective awful of December was more of a whimper than a roar. I don’t even know.

Last Month's Goal

I Want to Read:

  • Moar HEX

I Want to Write:

  • All the HEX posts
  • DemiPrincess 1 to the end

Uh…. Well…. I… read more of HEX? I’m on chapter 11 as I type this post up. I know I’m not likely to make both goals, despite wanting to, because life changes and OMG life changes! They are frightening and exciting both at once and I’m currently hush-hush about them. (2016 is not allowed to hear about them. 2016 will ruin things.)

But… Yeah. I’ve done my best to finish as much as I could, so I could start with a clean slate in January. That’s about all I have to say right now, sorry. There’ll be more updates in later posts, I’m sure. For now I’m going to hush and plead “I am really, really busy and running around trying to do a lot of planning” as my excuse for the worst update of the year.

I make no predictions on December. It should, if the past is any indication, be a relatively quiet month. Given that 2016 has, so far, decided to wreck any sense of normalcy, I’m going to bank on the past not being a good indication.

This Month's Goals

I Want to Read:

  • Moar HEX

I Want to Write:

  • All the HEX posts
  • DemiPrincess 1 to the end

Okay, so you’ll notice that I’m very focussed on the bilingual HEX read this month. That’s partially because I just really, really, really want to finish the project. It’s also partially because I really don’t want to be rescheduling them for later in 2017 than I’ve got all the posts sorted now. So December? Is going to be All About HEX, though you won’t really see that until 2017.

Beyond that, it’ll also be about wrapping up the regular blog posts, so a look back over the past year, my favourite reads for the year, etc. And that first DemiPrincess book. Want to finish that too. And then we’ll see! I’m just going to try and get as much done as I possibly can, whatever form that takes, really. And hopefully December won’t throw any curve balls at anyone.

November was… Well, it was certainly in keeping with the theme of 2016, let’s just put it that way. I did my best and made as much progress as I could given assorted whirlwind developments and the US election. (I don’t even live in the US.)

Last Month's Goal

I Want to Read:

  • Whatever strikes my fancy.
  • Some more of HEX

I Want to Write:

  • NaNoWriMo

Well, I certainly managed to read whatever hit my fancy! But I made no progress on HEX and I failed miserably at NaNoWriMo. Boohiss. It’s especially boohiss because I’m so close to the finale of the first novel. Any progress is good progress in my book, but still. I really, really, really want to write these stories, polish them and get them published. Ideally next year because, clearly, I want to be massively ambitious.

I do also have cover title ideas now, so that’s good too. It’s not that November was a bad month, per se. Just that it wasn’t anywhere near what I’d hoped or imagined it’d be at the start and it’s made me a bit grumpy. And, as a consequence, I have very little to say. I just want November (really, just 2016) to be over already.

So! I shall leave all you lovelies here. I hope you’ve had a much better month than I did! <3

And it is November! WHOOT! Let’s jump to it!

This Month's Goals

I Want to Read:

  • Whatever strikes my fancy.
  • Some more of HEX

I Want to Write:

  • NaNoWriMo

Yep. It is NaNoWriMo month! This year, I’m trying to be relatively good and actually follow the rules in more detail. By which I mean that I want to work on one story for the duration of the month rather than the rebelling I’ve been doing the past few years. I may still veer off into something shorter temporarily, but it’s not the plan.

The plan is to use November to get as far into the story as a whole as I possibly can. I’m pretty confident that I can get the first section (read: book) finished within November, but I’d like to get as much as the story as a whole done within that time, so I can start to work on getting it all published and out there for people to read and find.

And that’s basically it for my plans in November. I’m doubtful I’ll get any HEX comparison chapters in purely because those eat into my available time, but we’ll just see how it goes. I might surprise myself!
